Tasaf, PFP partner to lift poor households through commercial tree planting

Tanzania Social Action Fund (Tasaf) and the Private Forestry Programme (PFP) have entered a pact aimed at working together to reduce poverty and advance social protection of poor and vulnerable households by planting trees commercially.

The envisaged partnership will facilitate improved coordination, effective implementation and synergy creation between PFP through support to private plantation of forests and value chains in Tanzania (Panda Miti Kibiashara) and TASAF through productive social safety Net programme (PSSN).

Under the programme both Tasaf and PFP have a common focus on supporting vulnerable and poor households in the communities since they have convergence of objectives of increasing income and improving livelihoods of the targeted beneficiaries, a statement issued at the signing of the pact on Monday said.

Tasaf Executive Director Ladislaus Mwamanga said the fund and PFP will collaborate in the implementation of various activities within the value chain aimed at addressing the challenges of household food security and income by facilitating identification of poor and vulnerable households to take part in tree planting and other PFP operations.

Mwamanga also said that Tasaf will support identified poor households to participate in condition cash transfer and public works programme.

He underscored that the PFP support village are also targeted by PSSN, Public Works Programme under PSSN who will provide employment opportunity to poor households beneficiaries and earn seasonal transfers to meet consumption needs during the hunger season and protect their productive assets which could otherwise be sold to enable them access funds required to support the compelling needs during lean season.

He pointed out that the pact between Tasaf and PFP specifies the roles, responsibilities and obligations of the two parties. Likewise it outlines arrangements for monitoring and reporting resolutions of disputes if any.
