OVER 2,000 child abuse cases and rights violation incidences were reported to the Ministry of Community Development, Gender and Children from 2013 to 2014, it has been reported.
The Deputy Minister, Dr Pindi Chana, said in Dar es Salaam that the said cases were reported through a special phone number introduced to combat all forms of violence and humiliation against children countrywide.
According to Dr Chana, the cases include rape, sexual abuse, illegal human trafficking, child labour, early pregnancies, early marriages, abandonment and female genital mutilation (FGM).
"To help children provide information once they are mistreated, the government in 2013 launched a hotline number 116," she said.
The communication number has been connected to all regions purposely to facilitate reporting and developing fast solutions to the victims once cases have been reported.
According to her, Tanzania, as a member of the United Nations, has the duty to implement the international convention on the rights of the child, which is built by the five main pillars such as right to life, right to protection, right to be developed, right to participation as well as the right to non-discrimination.
She explained that the development of the child required maximum care from parents and other surrounding members of the society because every child belongs to the whole society and not a family as it has been misconceived.
"There is need to protect children and save them from mistreatment, abuse of their properties especially for orphans, being dumped and abandoned by their parents," insisted the Deputy Minister, adding that the government will never tolerate those who go against the fundamental rights of children, moreover legal action will be taken against all those who will be found to break the specified rights.
"I would like to take this opportunity also to denounce the acts of torturing and humiliating children due to the fact that these behaviours are unacceptable in any way, therefore, the government shall take effective measures to anyone in the society who will be involved," she warned, adding that the government is committed in promoting and protecting the rights of children.
